                                          The missed opportunity

I heard academic certificates and transcripts were out two months after starting
my farm project. Delighted, I prepared to travel to Dodoma to collect them.
My father gave me money for bus fare. The trip to Dodoma went smoothly, but
the journey back was quite the opposite. Our bus broke down several times,
and we had to stop for hours. Despite the frustrations, I had an enlightening
conversation with a man who eventually gave me a newspaper. Surprisingly,
it contained a job advertisement closely related to my field. I folded the paper
carefully and tucked it into my bag.
My name is Hinga, and I am 26 years old. I returned home to begin a farming
project after graduating from university last year. Though I had invested many
years in education, I believed farming could serve as a reliable alternative until
job opportunities arose. One evening, my father asked if I intended to continue
farming or seek employment. I explained that once my academic documents
were ready, I would collect them and start applying for jobs because certificates
                 were crucial for job applications.

It was a bright morning when I set out for the interview. I boarded the bus at
6:30 a.m., but the journey was full of problems, just like my previous trip.
First, a tyre burst as we drove through a forest. Although the bus swerved
dangerously, we survived. After an hour’s delay, we continued. Later, the
engine broke down completely. The passengers grew furious and demanded
refunds. My hopes of attending the interview began to fade as time passed.

I prepared my CV on a computer, wrote an application letter, printed it, attached
copies of my certificates and mailed them. One month later, I was called for
an interview in two days. That night, many thoughts occupied my mind. I
finally slept and dreamt of the interview. In the dream, I answered all questions
correctly, and the chairperson was impressed and stood up to shake my hand.
When I woke up, I hoped the dream would come true.
