The active and passive voice
1. (a) John kicked the ball hard.
(b) The ball was kicked hard by John.
2. (a) Maria wrote the email that caused chaos.
(b) The email that caused chaos was written by Maria.
3. (a) Mr Rwegasira teaches English.
(b) English is taught by Mr Rwegasira.
4. (a) That family will invite us to the wedding.
(b) We will be invited to the wedding by that family.

In Activity 1(g), you may have noticed that English sentences can be written
in two ways. You can either start a sentence by stating who did a particular
action. When this is the case, we refer to the active voice. In the given pairs of
sentences, all sentences in (a) are written in the active voice. Alternatively, you
can write a sentence by focusing on who or what experienced the action. In that
case, we refer to the passive voice. In the examples provided, the sentences in
(b) are in the passive voice.
