Not all verbs can be used in the passive voice. Only transitive verbs (those that
can take an object) can be expressed in the passive voice. For example, “to

write” is a transitive verb and can be used in the passive voice, as in Jane wrote
the letter/The letter was written. However, “to sleep”, which is an intransitive
verb, cannot be used in the passive.

Task

State whether each of the following sentences is in the active or passive
voice. Correct errors, if any.

1. The cake was bake by my grandmother.
2. I complete my school work before sleeping.
3. A new library was build in the city.
4. The road is repairing by workers.
5. The invitations were sent by Sarah.
6. The car was drive by Sefu.
7. The headmaster announced the winner of the debate competition.
8. The meeting was cancel by the manager.
9. The volunteers was cleaned the children’s playground.
10. The decision will be take by the president this month.

Exercise 3

Change the following sentences from active to passive or passive to active
voice as appropriate.

She teaches English.

2. The chef cooked a delicious meal last night.
3. The police arrested the thief.
4. We will complete our school project next month.
5. The manager gave the employees a bonus.
