Ten Editing and proofreading

Writing a coherent, concise and well-presented piece of work is a
challenge to many writers. Developing editing and proofreading
skills will help you as a student become familiar with the rules
of reinforcing grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and sentence
structure. In this chapter, students will learn theories and
principles of editing and proofreading that will enable them to edit
and proofread a variety of texts. The competencies developed will
enable them to polish and hence produce high-quality written work
that meets academic and professional standards.
Activity 10.1 Analysing the theories and principles of
editing and proofreading
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:
(a) Studying the text and answering the question found in the
Student’s Book. This activity aims at exposing the students to the
theories and principles of editing and proofreading Instruct each
student to read the text and the figure representing the principles
of editing and proofreading. The answers to the question may
vary. Ensure that they are correct and relevant.
(b) Reading the passage found in the Student’s Book and ask them
to respond to the questions. Make sure the answers provided are
relevant and accurate.
(c) Listening to a recorded online academic presentation on the
differences between reading and proofreading. You may instruct
each student to prepare a report on what he or she has listened to
and make a presentation.
