                Nine Principles of translating

         FOR ONLINE READING ONLY

Translation becomes complex when it involves translating a
technical text or document. Translation of technical documents
involves the conversion of complex and specialised content from
one language to another, maintaining accuracy and preserving the
intended technical meaning. In this chapter, students will practise
applying the principles of translation to produce a complex
authentic translation. The competencies developed will enable
them to provide translation services in different specialised fields
such as law, medicine, engineering and science and technology.

Activity 9.1 Analyse theories and principles of translation
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:

             (a) Reading the conversation between Alex and Eva found in
the Student’s Book. Alex is a language enthusiast, who is
passionate about translation. Eva is an experienced translator
with a background in linguistics. You may instruct the students
to pair up and act out the dialogue after reading individually.
             (b) Writing short notes on each of the principles of translation
presented in the Student’s Book. Ask them to use search engines
or any other sources to find relevant information.
             (c) Studying the translation of the text below and explain how the
translator applied the principles of translation and the impact
of those choices on the final product. The text was translated
                 from English into Kiswahili.
             (d) Translating individually the text found in the Student’s Book
into Kiswahili by applying the above principles of translation.
