The following phrases; the sun dipped low, tall grass, and
a narrow dirt trail create a sense of scary and isolation. The
physical isolation of the character in the forest reinforces

the theme of isolated forest and adds depth to the character’s
struggle, the struggle against nature. The setting provides a
symbolic representation of interpretation, the symbolism of the
landscape. The hills, tall grass, and ancient trees in the forest
with a river flowing serve as powerful symbols such as barriers
that the character must overcome.
(c) Reading the provided literary works and assessing the contri-
bution of each of the provided elements in the Student’s Book in
shaping the meaning. This activity can be done in pairs or small
groups. Instruct the students to read from various sources the
contribution of each of the elements in shaping the meaning of
a literary work. Ask them to present their findings in class and
lead a plenary discussion.
Activity 11.3 Relating lessons from literary works to real-life
situations
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:
(a) Reading the dialogue in the Student’s Book. This activity can
first be done individually, then acted in pairs. Lead a whole
class discussion about what James and Abdi share regarding
the lessons they learn from the novel.
(b) Reading a literary work and writing an analysis of how the
lessons gained from the characters and themes within the text
resonate with real-life situations. You may ask the students to
pair up and do this activity. Thereafter, ask them to present their
work and engage in a plenary discussion.
