              Chapter Analysing and appreciating

             Twelve literary genres

         FOR ONLINE READING ONLY

Analysing the conventions of each genre enables one to develop
critical thinking abilities and become skilled at recognising literary
devices and structures. In this chapter, students will learn to explain
the distinctive features of different genres of literature, apply the
theories of literature in critiquing literary work and express a
personal point of view after reading a literary work. Exploration of
these genres will enhance their ability to comprehend and interpret
texts, thereby improving their overall reading comprehension
skills. The competencies developed will enable them to become an
effective communicator with the ability to appreciate the aesthetics
of literature and become successful in the academic field.

Activity 12.1 Explaining the distinctive features of
                            different genres of literature

Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:

          (a) Reading the dialogue found in the Student’s Book and answering
the questions after it. Students can read individually, and then
act it out in pairs before answering the questions. The questions
may be answered first orally and then in writing. The students’
answers may vary. Make sure that the provided answers are
correct and relevant. They may read the ‘Did you know’ section
and other sources to gain deeper knowledge about the questions.
