(i) Say whether the oral texts in the box are formal,
informal, technical, literary colloquial, or technical
registers. Give reasons for your answer.
(ii) Choose any two of the registers in 1 and write a

paragraph for each. Then, explain what differentiates
them.
(b) Preparing talks that are associated with their chosen expertise
during the presentation. Ask them to discuss where they will
analyse the speaker’s language use and identify elements of
the register employed in the talks.
(c) Reading the story Life is to be lived and completing the
activities after it. Ask them to:
(i) Copy down all italicised words in the story and study them.
(ii) Provide the meaning of each word they have copied in (1).
(iii) Practise orally the usage of the words they have copied
above.
(iv) Write a sentence using each of the words they have copied
above.
Check their responses and comment accordingly. Then, use the ‘Did
you know?’ section and other resources to teach them phrasal verbs.
(d) Re-reading the story in Activity 4.2 (c) and finding all other
phrasal verbs. Then, ask them to use the phrasal verbs found
to construct sentences.
