                Introduction

All individuals require energy for various body functions.
This energy is essential for physiological activities such as
regulating body temperature and maintaining tissues. In
this chapter, students will learn about the concept of energy
balance, the importance of energy balance, components of
energy expenditure, factors affecting basal metabolic rate
and estimation of the total energy needs. The competences
developed will enable students to consume food based on the
body energy needs. Furthermore, the competences will enable
students to provide nutritional education to the community
               regarding energy balance.
