2. Engage students in interactive activities to discuss the factors
affecting basal metabolic rate. Check whether students
participate actively in group discussion. Ask them to note
what they have discussed
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
3. Guide students to perform Activity 3.2 and exercise 3.1 in
the Student’s Book on how to maintain energy balance. Mark
students’ works and provide feedback.
3.3 Estimation of total energy needs
Teaching and learning steps
1. Guide students to search information from the library or the
internet on the methods used to estimate energy needs.
2. In groups, guide students to discuss formulas used in the
calculation of basal metabolism, energy cost for activity and
thermal dynamic effect of food. Check whether each student
participates actively in group discussion. Make clarification
where necessary.
3. Use examples provided in the student’s book to enable them
to-do calculations for energy needs.
4. Guide students to perform Exercise 3.2. on the estimation
of energy expenditure. Mark students’ works and provide
feedback.
5. Provide students with a variety of activities that require
energy balance problem solving skills.
Note: There are various methods of estimating energy
expenditures. Task students to find other alternative ways. Let
them present the ways in class; and then, clear any misconception.
