7.3 Study designs
Teaching steps
1. Facilitate an open and engaging discussion about different
types of research designs such as cross-sectional studies,
cohort studies, case-control studies and Randomized
Controlled Trials (RCTs) in nutrition assessment.
2. Listen to students’ contributions and clarify any
misconceptions or misunderstandings that might emerge
by providing additional explanations, examples, or guiding
questions.
3. Guide students to make a clear distinction of various study
designs used in nutritional assessment.
4. Encourage students to work collaboratively to evaluate
critically various study designs in published research articles.
5. Organize a debate for the students to explore the strengths
and limitations of each study design.
6. Organize students in small groups to role play on how study
designs are applied in nutritional assessment.
7. Organize students in groups and guide them to perform
Activity 7.1 and Exercise 7.1. Mark students’ works and
provide feedback.
