Juma: That’s good to hear. And what about the cost? I’ve heard some CAT
tools can be quite pricey.
Rehema: It’s true that some of the more advanced CAT tools come with a hefty
price tag, but there are also plenty of free or more affordable options
available. It really depends on your specific needs and budget.
Juma: I see. Have you encountered any challenges or limitations with CAT

tools?
Rehema: Occasionally, especially when working with highly creative or subtle
difference text. CAT tools are great for technical or repetitive content,
but they can struggle with capturing the subtleties of language. In those
cases, I still rely on my traditional translation skills.
Juma: That makes sense. It sounds like CAT tools are a valuable addition to
your toolkit, but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Rehema: Exactly. They complement traditional translation methods rather than
replacing them entirely. But overall, I’m glad I made the switch. It’s
made my workflow much more efficient and streamlined.
Juma: Well, you’ve certainly piqued my interest. I might have to give CAT
tools a try myself.
Rehema: I highly recommend it. Just be prepared for a bit of a learning curve at
first. But trust me, it’s worth it in the end.
(b) Explore different Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools to understand their
types, features, advantages, and disadvantages.
Procedures:
1. Begin by researching various CAT tools available in the market. These could
include popular tools such as Google Translate, MateCat, SDL Trados, MemoQ,
Wordfast and OmegaT. Explore both free and paid options.
2. Look at the features offered by each tool. These might include translation
memory, terminology management, integration capabilities with other software
and collaboration features.
3. Investigate the user interface and ease of use. Consider factors like user-
friendliness, customisation options, and available technical support.
4. Create a comparative analysis chart or table outlining the key features, pros and
cons of each CAT tool studied;
5. Write a report summarising your findings and experiences during the exploration
process.
(c) Download at least two trial versions (if available) or explore free version CAT tools
from your practical exploration in (b). Then, experiment with basic translation
tasks using sample texts or documents they provide.
