FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Introduction
Writing a coherent, concise and well-presented piece of work is a challenge to
many writers. Developing editing and proofreading skills will help you as a student
become familiar with the rules of reinforcing grammar, punctuation, vocabulary
and sentence structure. In this chapter, you will learn theories and principles of
editing and proofreading that will enable you to edit and proofread a variety of
texts. The competencies developed will enable you to polish and hence produce
high-quality written work that meets academic and professional standards.
Think about

Analysing the theories of editing and proofreading is vital as they provide a valuable
framework for understanding the technicalities of language, the needs of readers and
the dynamics of the writing process. Understanding these theories, therefore, helps in
ensuring the effectiveness and quality of written communication. One of these theories
is the Linguistic Theory of editing and proofreading. This theory utilises linguistic
principles and insights to identify and correct errors in written texts to ensure that they
adhere to the conventions of the language. The following diagram summarises the key
