Theatre Arts for Advanced Secondary Schools

            Audience engagement
Audience engagement is a significant responsibility of theatre artists as it plays
a crucial role in the success and impact of a theatrical production. Theatre artists
have an obligation to engage the audience during the performances. They have

a responsibility to communicate the intended message, themes, and emotions
of the production effectively to the audience. They have to make sure that the
audience is active, cheerful and enjoying theatrical performances. For example,

during storytelling and ngoma performances, audiences are convinced to
participate through their energy and encouragement. Therefore, they are obliged
to connect emotionally with the audience. Also, they have to maintain focus and
energy throughout the performance and adapt to audience reactions. It is also a
responsibility of theatre artists to create an immersive environment that transports
the audience into the world of the play, to stimulate their senses and imagination.

            Community engagement
Community engagement is a vital responsibility of theatre artists as it fosters
a deeper connection between artists and the community. It fosters inclusivity
and social change. Theatre artists engage with communities through dialogue,
collaborating and sharing experiences with members of the community for
better performance results. Theatre artists have a responsibility to make their
work accessible to a diverse range of community members, including those from

different socio-economic backgrounds, ages and abilities. They have to also
make sure they create performances that resonate with the experiences, values
and concerns of the local community, addressing relevant social, cultural and
            political issues.

            Continued learning and growth
Theatre is a dynamic art form hence artists must continually seek opportunities
for learning and growth. This may involve attending workshops, master classes
and performances. They have to study theatre history and theories as well as
experiment with new techniques and approaches to theatrical productions. Theatre
artists have a responsibility to continue enhancing their skills and expertise in
their respective disciplines, including acting, directing, designing or technical

production. They should embrace opportunities to explore new artistic styles,
genres and approaches, pushing the boundaries of their creativity and expanding
            their artistic activities or boundaries.
