Theatre Arts for Advanced Secondary Schools

                (a) Set Design: The physical location and construction of the set, including
props and background details, which contribute to the atmosphere and
realism of the play or film must follow the country ethics. It should not
discriminate people based on their gender, race, age and disability.

                (b) Costume and Makeups: Clothing and makeups choices that reflect the
characters’ personalities, backgrounds and transformations in film or a
stage performance should adhere to norms, taboos and ethical values
of the nation. They should not intimidate both performers and audience
based on their ethnicity, race, gender and age. For example, demanding
female performers to show their nakedness even in characterization that
does not demand so is unethical. Therefore, as a director or performer
ensure costumes and make-up that you use do not reinforce stereotypes.
Make sure the cultural symbols standing for the country are appropriately
                    represented.

                (c) Acting style: Actors and their movements within the space which
contribute to the believability and emotional depth of characters should
consider the country ethics. Actions that can intimidate performers and
audience in terms of gender, race, ethnicity and age must be avoided. For
example, love affair is a private matter in African countries including
Tanzania. On this ground, it should be presented creatively and wisely to
avoid violation of the country ethics and intimidating families who most
of the times watch live performances, films and television together.

                (d) Lighting: Use lighting techniques that respect and enhance the visibility
and dignity of actors regardless of backgrounds. Avoid lighting practices
that may distort actors and audience’s appearance or misrepresent them.

                (e) Authenticity: Be as authentic as you can in representing cultures of the
people. Create sets that represent the setting of the story faithfully and
accurately. This is especially the case when dealing with real cultures
or historical periods of a particular culture. Avoid misrepresentation of
people’s culture. Proper representation of other people’s culture may
consequently increase a number of people appreciating your creative
                    endeavors.
