Institutions and organisations dealing with rights and responsibilities
There are several regulatory institutions and organisations that deal with rights
and responsibilities of theatre artists in Tanzania. These organisations and
institutions rely on helping artists with their work and their artistic rights. They
are of two categories, namely government and non-government organisations/

            institutions or agencies.

            Government organisations
Government organisations, also known as public-sector organisations, institution
or agencies are entities established and funded by governments at various levels.
These levels include local, regional, national or international. These organisations
may oversee issues such as copyright, intellectual property rights, funding for
the arts, censorship and cultural preservation. They also operate within the
framework of laws, regulations and policies set by the governing authority to fulfil
specific public interests, purposes and provide services to citizens. Examples of
governmental organisations are Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA) and
            National Art Council (NAC).

            Non-government organisations
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are private, non-profit organisations
that operate independently of government control and are driven by a mission to
address specific social, environmental, humanitarian and developmental issues.
There are various non-governmental organisations that deal with the rights,
welfare and responsibilities of artists in Tanzania. These also, can operate at
local, national or international levels. Some of the examples of non-governmental
organisations include Tanzania Artists Rights Organisation (TARO) and Nafasi
            Art Space.

            Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA)

COSOTA is a copyright society which was formed in 1999 under the section 46
Act 7. It is a governmental organisation that operates on a dual system, functioning
both as a copyright office and as a collective management organisation. COSOTA
as a government institution deals with issuing the license to the user of copyrighted
            works.
