Introduction
Artists are required to use language creatively and ethically. In this chapter,
you will learn the concept of creativity and language, relationship between
creativity, language and theatre arts, connection between language, culture
and theatre performances, types of languages used in theatre performances
and communication, theories of body language, principles of using body
language, ethical guidelines of using language creatively and importance
of using language creatively. The competencies developed will enable you
to enact theatrical performances by effectively portraying characters, using
language creatively to express emotions and convey intended meanings
through voice and body.

Creativity
Creativity involves doing something in a new and different way or manner
from what a person knows or sees. It refers to an act of transforming people’s
imaginations and ideas into reality. Creativity plays an important role in students’
cognitive, social and emotional development. It helps them solve problems by
using their own ideas, thoughts and brings in them a feeling of satisfaction.
Creative individuals do not copy ideas of others. Instead, they use ideas of others
as a basis to give birth to original and exceptional ideas. Creativity gives theatre
artists a room to think more efficiently when facing obstacles in life. Creative
individuals do not fear of challenges but rather they usually work beyond their
