Activity 5.2 Explaining meanings of written texts derived
from different registers
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:
(a) Writing short notes on the given items. Ask them to provide
relevant examples for each item. You can use the following short
notes and examples as a guide:
1. Frozen register: It is characterised by highly formal and
fixed language, often used in ceremonial or legal contexts
where language is prescribed and unchanged over time.
Some examples include national anthems, religious
scriptures, legal decrees, and historical documents.
2. Formal register: It is used in formal settings, such as
academic or professional environments, where polite and
respectful language is required. It avoids contractions and
slang. Some examples include academic essays, business
letters, official speeches, and professional reports.
3. Consultative register: It is used in professional or
technical settings where there is an interaction between
experts and non-experts. It maintains formality but may
include specialized terminology. Some examples include
consultations between doctors and patients, technical
support conversations, and meetings between professionals
from different fields.
