Sign language interpreting facilitates communication between deaf or hard-of-
hearing individuals and those who can hear through visual-manual communication
rather than spoken language. Sign language interpreting is provided to the deaf
community in various contexts, including education, government, legal, business
and others. Sign language interpreters convey the message from TSL to the intended
audiences in spoken languages such as Kiswahili or English and vice versa. It
plays a crucial role in ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in various settings,
including educational institutions, public events and medical appointments. Each
mode of interpreting bridges communication gaps and facilitates understanding
across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Lost in Interpreting
It was the most important diplomatic conference where representatives from nations
across the region gathered to discuss the border conflicts between Kango and Lenda.
Among the attendees was Ikupa, a skilled multilingual interpreter. She sat poised
behind her interpretation booth, ready to facilitate communication between delegates.
As the conference progressed, a representative from Kango said in French “Lenda est
comme un jeune frère, nous n’avons donc pas besoin de jouer avec ça et de trouver
des solutions.” meaning in English “Lenda is like a young brother so we need not
to play about this and find solutions.” With meticulous attention, Ikupa interpreted
the statement into Kiswahili saying “Hatuwezi kukubali kama nchi kuruhusu kiinchi
kidogo kama Lenda kutuchezea.” Meaning as a country, Kango can never allow a small
country like Lenda to provoke them.
