integrity of their profession while ensuring effective communication and promoting

(c) Act out the following courtroom situations then complete the task that follows.
[A courtroom. Nai, a legal interpreter, stands beside Namnyaki, the defendant, who is
accused of theft. The trial is underway.]
Nai: [interpreting for Namnyaki] “Your Honor, I did not commit this crime.
I swear, I am innocent.” [During a break in the trial, Namnyaki leans
in close to Nai, speaking urgently.]
Namnyaki: “Nai, please, you have to help me. I know who really stole the items.
It wasn’t me. But if I speak up, my family will be in danger. He had
threatened to harm my family Please, don’t interpret this. I beg you.”
[Back in the courtroom, Nai hesitates, torn between her duty
to accurately interpret and Namnyaki’s plea for confidentiality.
Suddenly, the prosecutor approaches them.]
Prosecutor: “What was that all about? Why weren’t you interpreting everything?
Your job is to interpret accurately, not to hold back information.”
[Nai faces a difficult decision, knowing that her response could have
serious consequences for both Namnyaki and herself.]
(d) Reflect on the ethical considerations, the choices made by the characters, and the
potential outcomes using the following discussion questions and provide both oral
and written responses.
1. What ethical principles are at stake for Nai in this scenario? How does her duty
to accurately interpret conflict with Namnyaki’s plea for confidentiality?
2. What should Nai do while considering Namnyaki’s fears of retaliation against
her family? What factors should she weigh in making her decision?
3. What are the potential consequences for Nai if she complies with the prosecutor’s
demand and translates Namnyaki’s revelation about knowing the true thief?
How might this decision affect Namnyaki’s case and her trust in Nai as her
interpreter?
